Atlanta Botanical Garden is adjacent to midtown's Piedmont Park at 1345 Piedmont Ave. N.E. (MARTA: Arts Center Station). The garden's 30 acres contain woodland shade, parterre, Japanese rock and rose gardens as well as walking trails through a 15-acre forest. The interactive Children's Garden has play areas designed to teach children about plants. The Fuqua Conservatory features tropical, Mediterranean, desert and endangered plants; the Fuqua Orchid Center houses rare orchids from around the world. Allow 1 hour minimum.

The Antebellum Plantation is at jct. John B. Gordon Dr. and Jefferson Davis Dr., in Stone Mountain Park just e. of downtown Atlanta off I-285 exit 39B via US 78 exit 8. This compound is a complex of early 19th-century houses and buildings relocated from throughout the state. The 19 buildings include the main house, overseer's house, slave cabins and a cookhouse, all furnished in period. Allow 1 hour minimum.

Atlanta History Center is at 130 W. Paces Ferry Rd. N.W. The history center features a 30,000-square-foot museum housing exhibitions about the history of Atlanta, the Civil War and Southern folk arts. Some 33 acres of gardens and woodland trails relate the horticultural history of the area and are the setting for two historic houses: The Swan House, a 1928 classically styled mansion, and Tullie Smith Farm, a restored 1845 farmhouse complete with traditional outbuildings and antebellum activities. The new two story Centennial Olympic Games Museum at the Center is a two-story exhibition capturing the spirit of the Olympic Games, especially the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games. The museum has an interactive sports lab. Allow 3 hours minimum.

Fernbank Museum of Natural History is at 767 Clifton Rd. N.E. (MARTA: North Avenue Station to bus #2). The museum features dioramas, interactive displays, IMAX films and other exhibits pertaining to natural history, the environment and culture. "A Walk Through Time in Georgia" places visitors within re-creations of the state's diverse regions, from the coast to the mountains, to illustrate the Earth's history. "Giants of the Mesozoic" features the world's largest dinosaurs in a scene that highlights a 123-foot-long Argentinosaurus, the largest animal ever to walk the Earth. Food is available. Allow 1 hour minimum.

Georgia Aquarium

Georgia Aquarium is at 225 Baker St. in downtown across from Centennial Olympic Park and the Georgia World Congress Center. The aquarium, opened in 2005, is one of the largest in the world, with 8 million gallons of fresh- and saltwater in display tanks. Home to more than 120,000 marine animals from 500 species from around the globe, among the many exotic species displayed are whale sharks, bowmouth guitarfish, great hammerhead sharks and beluga whales. The 4-D theater combines a 3-D film--Deepo's Undersea 3D WonderShow, an actor and interactive seats to allow viewers to experience the world as denizens of the deep. Guns, knives, fishing poles, lighters and matches are not allowed inside the Aquarium. Food is available from 1 hour after the aquarium opens until 1 hour before it closes. Jimmy Carter Presidential Library & Museum, on Freedom Pkwy., exit 248C and follow signs to the Carter Center, contains more than 27 million documents, photographs and other objects detailing the Carter administration.
